What Does the Magnetic Shield Around Our Planet Do?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What does the magnetic shield around our planet do?

The Big Idea

Our planet has an invisible shield wrapped all around it. It is Earth's magnetic field, and it protects us from a stream of particles flying out from the Sun. Let's see how the shield works!

Particles From the Sun

Step one: particles from the Sun. The Sun sends out a stream of charged particles. They race through space toward Earth.

The Field Steers Them

Step two: the field steers them. Earth's magnetic field bends and steers the particles away from most of Earth's surface. Without this shield, the particles could wear away part of the atmosphere over a very long time.

Lights at the Poles

Step three: lights at the poles. Some charged particles are guided toward the poles. There they create the northern and southern lights, while our air and oceans keep life safe.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The Sun sends out particles. Earth's field steers them away. Most never reach the surface. Some are guided to the poles.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Earth's field is an invisible shield. Without it, the atmosphere could wear away over a very long time. Particles guided to the poles create auroras. Our air, oceans, and magnetic shield work together to keep life safe.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Hold a magnet behind a sheet of paper. Move a toy steel car near it. Say how the magnet steers the car. That is how Earth's shield steers particles. Tell a grown-up what you discover!
