Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How does swirling liquid metal deep inside Earth make a magnet?

The Big Idea

Deep under your feet, a layer of melted metal swirls around and around. That swirling is what makes Earth's magnetic field. Let's find out how a planet-sized dynamo works, far below the ground where nobody can dig!

The Outer Core

Step one: the outer core. Under Earth's rocky crust and mantle is a layer of melted iron and nickel called the outer core. This layer is about 1,400 miles thick.

It Swirls

Step two: it swirls. The metal swirls because heat rises from the center and because Earth spins. The moving metal carries electric currents.

A Natural Dynamo

Step three: a natural dynamo. Electric currents make magnetic fields, just like in a wire. Scientists call this natural engine a dynamo, and it has been running for billions of years.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Rock covers the outside. Liquid metal swirls underneath. The moving metal carries currents. Those currents make Earth's field.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The outer core is about 1,400 miles thick. Heat from the center makes the metal swirl. Earth's spin helps shape the motion, so the whole layer twists as it flows. The dynamo has been running for billions of years.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Slowly swirl a spoon in a bowl of cool, thick soup. Imagine the soup is hot liquid metal. Picture the swirling making a magnetic field. Ask a grown-up to bring the soup. Keep asking why, and keep exploring!

Outro

Earth's magnetic field comes from swirling liquid metal in its outer core, a natural dynamo. Science is amazing! Keep wondering and keep exploring! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
