Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does a magnet stop working when it gets very hot?

The Big Idea

Heat can make a strong magnet stop working. When atoms get hot, they jiggle faster and faster. Let's see what that does inside a magnet. This one is for learning about only, never for trying at home! Heat can hurt people, so we keep it far away from magnets.

Atoms Jiggle

Step one: atoms jiggle. Heat makes atoms jiggle faster. In a hot magnet, all that jiggling scrambles the tiny magnetic domains.

The Curie Point

Step two: the Curie point. Every magnetic material has a temperature where this happens, called its Curie temperature. Iron loses its magnetism at about 1,418 degrees Fahrenheit, or 770 degrees Celsius.

Cooling Down

Step three: cooling down. After the magnet cools, it may not regain its strength. Never heat a magnet at home, because heating things can also be unsafe. Scientists do this only in careful lab tests, with the right gear.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Cool domains line up neatly. Heat gives them lots of energy. They jiggle and scramble. The magnet loses its power.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Iron loses its magnetism at about 1,418 degrees Fahrenheit. Every magnetic material has its own special temperature. Hot atoms jiggle faster and scramble the domains. And you should never heat a magnet at home.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Gather a crowd of friends or toys. Line them up facing the same way. Now ask them to wiggle and spin. The magnet disappears! Tell a grown-up what you discover!

Outro

Heat makes atoms jiggle until they scramble a magnet's domains and the magnet stops working. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
