Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Is rust magnetic?

The Big Idea

Is rust magnetic? Ordinary rust is a reddish iron oxide, and it is only very weakly magnetic. A magnet can still stick to a rusty nail, though. Let's find out why!

What Rust Is

Step one: what rust is. Rust is a reddish iron oxide. It forms when iron meets oxygen and water, which is why bikes and tools left in the rain turn orange. Rust itself is only very weakly magnetic.

The Metal Underneath

Step two: the metal underneath. A magnet usually sticks to a rusty nail because of the iron metal under the rust. It is not sticking to the rust itself.

When Rust Eats Through

Step three: when rust eats through. If rust eats all the way through a thin piece of iron, the pull gets weaker and weaker. Powdered rust flakes barely react to a magnet at all.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The nail is iron. A layer of rust covers it. The magnet pulls on the iron below. Less iron means a weaker pull.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Magnetite, a black iron oxide, is strongly magnetic. Ordinary red rust is not. A rusty nail still has iron under the rust. When most of the iron is gone, the magnet can barely feel it.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Compare a clean steel paper clip and a rusty nail with a magnet. See which one holds more small clips. Think about why the nail might be weaker. Wash your hands afterward. Keep asking why, and keep exploring!

Outro

Rust is barely magnetic itself, but the iron under it still feels a magnet. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
