Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How can a magnet tell a steel can from an aluminum can?

The Big Idea

A magnet can sort cans without even looking at them. Food cans are usually steel, and many soda cans are aluminum. Let's see how a magnet tells them apart, and how recycling centers use that trick every day.

Steel Food Cans

Step one: steel food cans. Food cans are usually made of steel with a thin coating of tin. Steel contains iron, so a magnet sticks to the can.

Aluminum Soda Cans

Step two: aluminum soda cans. Many soda cans are made of aluminum, which a magnet ignores. Aluminum has no iron inside, so a magnet has nothing to grab.

Sorting at Recycling Centers

Step three: sorting at recycling centers. Giant magnets lift steel cans from a moving belt of mixed trash. The aluminum cans stay behind, and another machine removes them.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! A steel can has iron in it. An aluminum can does not. A giant magnet lifts only the steel. Then recycling continues.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A magnet can lift tons of steel at a recycling plant. Food cans are usually steel with a tin coating. Many soda cans are aluminum, so they stay put. Sorting helps recycling work better.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Hold a magnet near a soup can. Then hold it near a soda can. Which one does it pull? Check the labels, or ask a grown-up what each can is made of. Write down what you notice, and share it with a grown-up.

Outro

Magnets stick to steel cans but not aluminum ones, which helps recycling centers sort them. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
