Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why are some of the oldest weird animal fossils found high in the Rocky Mountains?

The Big Idea

Some of the oldest, weirdest animal fossils are found high in the Rocky Mountains. The Burgess Shale, in Yoho National Park, holds fossils about 508 million years old. How did sea animals end up on a mountain?

A Buried Sea Floor

Step one: a mudslide buried the animals. They lived on an ancient sea floor. A sudden mudslide buried them quickly, which helped to preserve them.

Soft Parts Saved

Step two: soft bodies were preserved. Soft parts like eyes and legs usually rot away, but here they were saved in fine detail. Opabinia, with five eyes, is one famous find.

Mountains Rise

Step three: Earth's crust lifted the sea floor. Over millions of years, moving plates pushed the old sea floor up high. That is how ocean animals ended up inside the mountains, far from any sea today.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at the Burgess Shale! Long ago, this place was a warm sea. A mudslide buried the animals fast. Some had five eyes or strange spines. Then Earth slowly lifted the sea floor into mountains.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The Burgess Shale was discovered in 1909. It holds fossils about 508 million years old. Opabinia had five eyes and a long nozzle. Fossil sites are protected, so visits are with trained guides.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Invent your own weird ancient sea animal. Give it extra eyes, extra legs, or both. Draw it, and give it a name. Tell a grown-up how it lives.
