Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do some mountain rocks look like wavy ribbons?

The Big Idea

Some mountain rocks look like wavy ribbons because their layers were folded. Earth's crust squeezed them from the sides, like pushing on a rug. It happened slowly, over millions of years, and those folds are still there today.

Flat Sea Floor Layers

Step one: flat layers form. Many mountain rocks began as layers of sand or mud on ancient sea floors. Over time, more layers piled on top, and the sediment hardened into stone.

Earth Squeezes

Step two: Earth's crust squeezes them. The crust pushes from both sides, like a rug being pushed across the floor. The layers slowly bend instead of snapping, because deep rock can be warm and a little bit squishy.

Slow Folds Appear

Step three: folds appear. The pushing went on for millions of years, so the rocks had time to bend. You can see big folds in cliffs in the Canadian Rockies.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at rock folds! The rock starts out as flat layers. Then slow pressure squeezes from both sides. The layers bend into waves, like ribbons. Some folds are as big as a mountain.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Folded layers can be as small as a hand or as big as a mountain. The rock bent slowly, so it did not snap. You can see folds in cliffs in the Canadian Rockies. Look from roadsides and viewpoints, not from steep cliff edges.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Stack colored paper or towels on a table. Push gently from both sides. Watch the layers fold into waves. That is just how mountains fold.

Outro

Mountains can bend before they break. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
