Why Does Wind Roar Through Mountain Passes?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does wind roar through mountain passes?

The Big Idea

Wind roars through mountain passes because the air gets squeezed through a narrow gap! A pass is a low spot between two peaks. It acts like a funnel for the wind.

Narrow Gap

Step one: a narrow gap. A pass is a low gap between two higher peaks. Air that is blowing across the land has to squeeze through this narrow space, all at once.

Speed Up

Step two: speeding up. When air has to squeeze through a narrow gap, it speeds up, just as water speeds up when you squeeze the end of a garden hose. That is why passes feel so windy. Your ears may even hear the roar.

Wind Warnings

Step three: wind warnings. Wind can blow much faster in a pass than on the open plain. That is why some passes have wind warning signs, to help drivers and hikers get ready.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! There are tall peaks on both sides. In the middle is a narrow gap. The wind rushes through quickly and loudly. A sign warns people about the gusty wind.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Wind in a pass can be much faster than the wind nearby. Some passes are known for their strong winds all year. The roaring sound comes from fast air rushing past rocks and trees. Windy places need extra care and warm clothes.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Blow through a wide-open hand. Then blow through a small gap between your fingers. Where does the air feel faster? That is how a pass works!
