Why Do Flies Matter So Much to High-Mountain Flowers?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do flies matter so much to high-mountain flowers?

The Big Idea

Flies matter so much to high-mountain flowers because they are the main visitors! At high altitudes, there are fewer bees, but there are plenty of flies. So flies do much of the pollinating.

Fewer Bees

Step one: fewer bees. The higher you go, the colder it gets, and fewer bees can live there. But there are plenty of flies, because many flies can handle the cold.

Carrying Pollen

Step two: carrying pollen. Flies visit flowers for nectar. As they go from bloom to bloom, they carry pollen that helps flowers make seeds. Without that, there would be fewer flowers next year.

Warm Bowls

Step three: warm bowls. Many alpine flowers have a bowl shape that traps warmth. Flies like to rest in the bowls and warm up in the Sun, the way you might sit in a sunny window. Warm flies fly better!

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The petals curve into a bowl. The bowl catches sunlight and gets warm. A fly rests inside to warm up and get ready to fly. And it picks up pollen to carry to the next flower.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Some flowers turn their blooms to follow the Sun so flies can bask. The blooms act like tiny satellite dishes for sunlight. Flies are very important pollinators in the high mountains. The flower gives the fly warmth and food, and the fly helps the flower make seeds.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Draw a bowl-shaped flower. Add a fly resting inside. Draw sunlight shining in. Why is the fly happy there? Because it is warm and has food!
