How Can Bar-Headed Geese Fly Over the Himalayas?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How can bar-headed geese fly over the Himalayas?

The Big Idea

Bar-headed geese fly over the Himalayas, the highest mountains on Earth, with big lungs and super blood! They travel between India and Central Asia. It is one of the most amazing flights in nature, and scientists are still studying how they do it.

Big Lungs

Step one: big lungs. Bar-headed geese have big lungs, which help them take in plenty of air. That matters because the air up high is thin, with much less oxygen in each breath.

Oxygen Blood

Step two: special blood. Their blood is very good at picking up oxygen, even when there is very little. That gives their muscles the power to keep flapping hour after hour.

Steady Flapping

Step three: steady wings. They flap steadily and climb to over 20,000 feet. They often choose times when the winds are calmer, which makes the trip easier.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The bar-headed goose has two dark bars on its head. Big lungs bring in lots of air. Special blood catches the oxygen. And strong wings flap steadily, mile after mile.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Scientists have followed bar-headed geese with tiny trackers. The trackers show how high the geese fly. They climb to over 20,000 feet. Few other birds can match that trip. These geese are true mountain champions!

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Flap your arms 30 times, as if you were a goose. How does your breathing change? Now imagine doing that in thin air. That is how hard geese work!
