Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why are alpine flowers so bright for such little plants?

The Big Idea

Alpine flowers are bright because they need to be noticed! The plants are small, but their flowers can be big and brightly colored. Bright colors help in two different ways.

Short Summer

Step one: a short summer. High on a mountain, summer lasts only a few weeks. Flowers must bloom and make seeds quickly, before the snow returns.

Few Visitors

Step two: attract visitors. There are fewer insects up high, so each flower must stand out. Big, bright petals are like a sign that says, come here for nectar.

Sun Protection

Step three: strong sunshine. Sunshine is strong in the mountains, and it helps plants make bright colors called pigments. Some of these pigments help protect the plant from UV light, a bit like sunscreen. For a short time, the mountain is full of color!

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The blossom can be nearly as big as the whole plant. Bright colors show up from far away. Pollinators spot them and fly over for nectar. For a few weeks, the meadow looks like a painted carpet.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Some alpine flowers are almost as big as the whole plant. Alpine meadows burst with color for just a few weeks. Pollinators like bees and flies help the flowers make seeds. Look and enjoy, but leave the flowers where they grow.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Find a photo of an alpine flower. Pick three bright colors from it. Paint a flower using the same colors. Why would a bee notice it?
