Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How did a famous explorer find out that plants live in bands on mountains?

The Big Idea

A German scientist named Alexander von Humboldt discovered that plants live in bands on mountains! In 1802, he visited the Andes and studied the plants as he went uphill. Then he drew a map of the plants by height.

Visit the Andes

Step one: visit the Andes. In 1802, the German scientist Alexander von Humboldt visited the Andes. He traveled with scientific instruments and a lot of curiosity.

Notice the Bands

Step two: notice the bands. He noticed that plants changed in bands as he went uphill. He wrote down what grew at each height, and even measured the air.

Draw the Map

Step three: draw the map. He drew a map showing the plants by height. He saw that going up a tropical mountain was like traveling from the equator toward the poles.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! At the bottom, warm-weather plants grew. In the middle, cooler forests appeared. Higher up, small alpine plants took over. And at the very top, there was snow.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Humboldt's drawings showed plants arranged in neat rows by height. His idea helped scientists understand how climate shapes life. He also noticed how nature is connected in a web. Today scientists still use his ideas to study mountains all over the world.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Draw your own plant map on a hillside. Write down what grows at the bottom, the middle, and the top. Ask a grown-up to help you look, and draw what you find! Share what you discover with a grown-up.

Outro

Humboldt's plant map showed how life changes with height. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
