Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do different animals live at different heights on a mountain?

The Big Idea

Different animals live at different heights because each one fits a certain climate! Food, shelter, and temperature decide who lives where. Let's climb the mountain in our minds and meet them.

Warm Foothills

Step one: warm foothills. Deer and coyotes like the warm foothills. There is lots of grass to eat and room to roam, and the winters are milder.

Cool Forests

Step two: cool forests. Black bears and squirrels make their homes in the forests. Trees give them food and shelter, and bears also munch berries, roots, and insects.

Above the Trees

Step three: above the trees. Mountain goats, pikas, and marmots thrive above the treeline. Plants are low there, and rocks give them shelter from wind and from predators.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Deer graze in the open grass near the bottom. Black bears roam the forest. Squirrels scamper in the trees. And mountain goats stay high on the cliffs, far above the trees.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Some animals live in just a narrow band of a mountain. Their body, fur, and food needs fit that band, like a key in a lock. A pika would overheat in the warm foothills. Watch wildlife from far away and never feed it.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Take your mountain drawing from earlier. Add animals in the right zones. Who lives at the top? Draw a mountain goat, a pika, or a marmot! Share what you discover with a grown-up.

Outro

Each animal finds its own place on the mountain. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
