Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does spring arrive later high on a mountain?

The Big Idea

Spring arrives later high on a mountain because higher places stay colder for longer! Snow there takes more time to melt. So spring seems to climb the mountain, one step at a time.

Colder Up High

Step one: colder up high. Higher places stay colder for longer, so winter lingers on the peaks. Deep snow takes more time to melt, and cold nights can come back long after spring starts below.

A Slow Wave

Step two: a slow wave. Flowers bloom first at the bottom. Then spring moves uphill like a slow wave over many weeks.

Spring and Winter

Step three: two seasons at once. In the Rockies, a trail can have blooming flowers at the bottom and deep snow at the top in the same week. Fall comes earlier at the top, too, so the growing season is short.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! In the valley, flowers are already blooming. A little higher, buds are just sprouting. Higher still, snow lingers in patches. At the top, winter has hardly left.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! In early summer, you can climb from spring up into winter. Spring moves up a mountain hundreds of feet each week. Animals follow the new green growth uphill, eating the freshest shoots. Weather up high can change fast, so grown-ups plan carefully.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Keep a diary of when flowers bloom in your yard or park. Compare it with a place that is higher or lower. Which one blooms first? Tell a grown-up what you think will happen next year! Share what you discover with a grown-up.
