Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does climbing a mountain feel like traveling toward the poles?

The Big Idea

Climbing a mountain can feel like traveling toward the poles! As you go up, the temperature drops, just like when you travel north. Plants and animals change in a similar way.

Temperature Drops

Step one: temperature drops. Going up a mountain makes the air colder. Traveling north toward the Arctic does the same.

Plants Change

Step two: plants change. A forest near the base may turn into tundra near the top, like the plants of the far north. Tundra is a cold land with low plants and no tall trees, where the ground stays frozen below.

Short Trip, Big Change

Step three: a short trip, a big change. Going up a few thousand feet can feel like traveling hundreds of miles toward the Arctic. That is why mountains are such handy places for scientists to study nature.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Forests grow where it is mild. Tundra plants grow where it is colder. Some cold-loving animals live in both places. And ice and snow cap the coldest places.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Some Arctic plants also grow high on mountains far to the south. They moved there when the world was colder long ago. Now they live on cool mountaintops, like islands in a warmer sea. Scientists call them arctic-alpine plants.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Look at two pictures: an Arctic tundra and an alpine meadow. List three things they have in common. What surprised you the most? Share what you discover with a grown-up.
