Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How do scientists figure out how old a mountain is?

The Big Idea

Scientists use clocks hidden in rocks to find out how old a mountain is! Certain minerals contain atoms that slowly change over time. Measuring those changes reveals when a rock formed or cooled, which can be millions of years ago.

Atom Clocks

Step one: atom clocks. Radioactive atoms in rocks change into other kinds of atoms very slowly, at a steady speed. They work like very slow clocks that scientists can read in a lab.

Fossil Clues

Step two: fossil clues. Fossils in rock layers give extra clues about age. Older layers are usually buried beneath newer ones, like a stack of pancakes with the oldest at the bottom.

Folded Rocks

Step three: folded rocks. The way rocks have been folded and tilted tells scientists what happened when. Putting all the clues together gives scientists the best answer.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Atoms in minerals count the years, one tiny tick at a time. Fossils show what life was like back then. Layers show which rocks came first. And folds show how the rocks were pushed together.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Radioactive atoms in rocks work like very slow clocks. Some mountains are tens of millions of years old. Others, like the Appalachians, are hundreds of millions of years old. The Rockies are younger than the Appalachians, so they are sharper.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Draw a timeline of mountain ages: Rockies, Alps, Appalachians. Add a mountain you know. Then estimate its age, and compare your guess with what books say! Share what you discover with a grown-up.

Scientists read the clocks and clues hidden in rocks. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
