What Crafty Clover says in this video
Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What is the Continental Divide?
The Big Idea
The Continental Divide is a line along mountain ridges where rain and melting snow choose different directions! Water on one side flows toward one ocean, and water on the other side flows toward another. It is like a rooftop for a whole continent.
A Line on the Ridges
Step one: a line on the ridges. The divide follows the highest ridges of a mountain range. Rain that lands right on top has to pick a side.
Water Chooses
Step two: water chooses a side. Water falling on one side flows toward one ocean. Water on the other side flows the opposite way, toward a different ocean.
A Triple Divide
Step three: a triple divide. In the Canadian Rockies, a peak called Snow Dome sends water three ways. Some goes to the Pacific Ocean, some to the Arctic Ocean, and some to Hudson Bay.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Rain or snow lands on the mountains. The ridge top splits it, like the peak of a roof. Water on one side trickles into streams that flow one way. Water on the other side flows the other way.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! A single drop of rain can end up in a different ocean depending on which side it lands. Streams join rivers, and rivers carry water for hundreds of miles. The divide runs all the way through North America, from Canada down to Mexico. It is also called the Great Divide.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Turn a bowl upside down in a tray. Pour a little water on the top. See where it runs. The high point is like a divide! Share what you discover with a grown-up.
Outro
The Continental Divide decides which ocean a raindrop will reach. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
