Which Is the Tallest Mountain in the Whole Solar System?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Which is the tallest mountain in the whole solar system?

The Big Idea

The tallest known mountain in our solar system is Olympus Mons on Mars! It is a giant volcano about 13.6 miles, or 22 kilometers, high. That is about two and a half times taller than Mount Everest.

A Giant Volcano

Step one: a giant volcano. Olympus Mons is a volcano on the planet Mars. Its slopes are so gentle that it looks like a giant shield lying on the ground.

Super Wide

Step two: super wide. Its base is about as wide as the state of Arizona. It is so wide that if you stood on it, you could not see its edge.

Why So Big?

Step three: why so big? Mars has less gravity than Earth, so tall piles of rock can stand. And Mars has no moving plates to carry volcanoes away, so lava kept piling up in one spot.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Mars is a cold, dusty, red planet. Olympus Mons is its giant volcano. Mount Everest would look small next to it. Spacecraft that orbit Mars help us see it from above.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Olympus Mons is about 13.6 miles high. It is about two and a half times taller than Mount Everest. Mars has less gravity than Earth, so mountains can grow taller there. It is not erupting today, as far as we know.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Draw Mount Everest as a one-inch bar on paper. Draw Olympus Mons next to it, two and a half inches tall. See how much bigger the Mars giant is! Share what you discover with a grown-up.
