Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What makes the Canadian Rockies so special?

The Big Idea

The Canadian Rockies in Alberta and British Columbia have towering peaks, turquoise lakes, glaciers, and forests, all in one place! They are so special that big areas are protected as national parks. Let's see why.

Towering Peaks

Step one: towering peaks. Mount Robson is the tallest peak in the Canadian Rockies, at about 12,972 feet. Many other peaks rise high above deep valleys, and snow stays on them for much of the year.

Ancient Sea Rocks

Step two: rocks from ancient seas. Many of the rocks are limestone and shale that formed under oceans long ago. Then Earth's crust lifted them high into the sky, and fossils of ancient sea creatures can still be found there.

Parks for Wildlife

Step three: parks for wildlife. National parks like Banff and Jasper protect big areas for wildlife. Bears, elk, and sheep can roam while visitors stay on trails.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Tall peaks reach up into the clouds. Glacier water carries fine rock powder that makes lakes glow turquoise. Glaciers are rivers of slow-moving ice. And forests cover the valleys and shelter wildlife.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Banff National Park is Canada's oldest national park. It started back in 1885, a very long time ago. Glaciers there are shrinking slowly as the climate warms. Please remember to stay on trails and keep a safe distance from wildlife.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Draw a Canadian Rockies scene. Include a peak, a lake, a forest, and an animal. Then label each part, and tell a grown-up why it is special! Share what you discover with a grown-up.
