Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does the wind blow?

The Big Idea

Have you ever felt a breeze on a hot day, or flown a kite? Air rushes to fill a gap! Wind is just air on the move. Here is the simple science: warm air rises, cooler air slides in, and that slide is wind. Sometimes it is a gentle breeze, and sometimes it is a gusty gale.

Sun Heats Some Air

Step one: the sun heats some air. Sunshine warms the ground, and the ground warms the air just above it. Some spots get warmer than others, like sunny fields next to shady woods. It often starts right where the air warms up.

Warm Air Rises

Step two: warm air rises. Warm air is lighter than cool air, so it floats upward. When it rises, it leaves a gap near the ground. Big winds, like sea breezes, start in exactly this way.

Cooler Air Moves In

Step three: cooler air moves in. Cooler air nearby slides in to fill the empty spot. That sliding air is what we call wind.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at how wind starts! First, the sun heats some air. Second, warm air rises. Third, cooler air moves in. And fourth, you feel wind.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A tiny breeze and a storm are both moving air. The stronger the difference in warmth, the stronger the wind can be. Sailboats and wind turbines use wind to move and make power. Wind carries seeds, and pollen, and helps plants spread.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Wet a finger and hold it up. The side that feels coolest is where the wind is coming from. Feel which way the air is sliding. Can you explain why wind is moving air?

Outro

Wind is air on the move, and you can feel it on your cheeks! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
