Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do we have day and night?

The Big Idea

Have you ever wondered where the sun goes at night? It does not go anywhere! Earth is a spinning ball. Half of it faces the sun, and that half has day. The other half faces away from the sun, and that half has night. So day and night happen because of Earth's spin, and not because the sun goes away.

Earth Spins

Step one: Earth spins. Earth turns around an imaginary line through its middle, called its axis. We do not feel it, because everything spins along with us, smoothly and steadily. Each turn is smooth, and it never stops.

Your Side Faces the Sun

Step two: your side faces the sun. As Earth turns, your part of the world swings around to face the sun. Light from the sun reaches you, and the sky gets bright.

Daytime

Step three: daytime. When your side faces the sun, it is daytime. It is bright, so you can see, play, and learn outside. That is why the sun seems to rise in the morning.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at Earth's spin! Earth spins. Then your side faces the sun. That is daytime. And when your side turns away, night comes. It is dark, so it is time to rest and sleep.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! One full spin of Earth takes about 24 hours. That is why a day is 24 hours long. At any moment, it is day on one half of Earth and night on the other. The sun does not move around us. Our spinning makes it look like it moves.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! In a dark room, shine a flashlight on a ball. The lit side is day, and the dark side is night. Slowly turn the ball, and watch day change to night. Can you explain what the flashlight and the ball stand for?

Outro

Earth spins, and so we get day and night. Sweet dreams tonight! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
