Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do places have names?

The Big Idea

Imagine trying to tell a friend about a special spot by the river, with no name to use. A name pins a place in the mind! Names let us talk about a spot without drawing it every time. With a name, one word can bring a whole place to life. Names are one of the oldest tools people have for sharing where things are.

A Place Exists

Step one: a place exists. There is a winding river with a curve in it, and people visit it often. At first the spot has no name, so it is hard to talk about.

People Name It

Step two: people name it. Someone gives the place a name, like Riverbend, because of the bend in the river. A name is a short label that everyone can say. A shared name is like a tiny map made of sound.

The Name Spreads

Step three: the name spreads. People tell their friends and family, and the name gets used again and again. Soon lots of people know exactly which place you mean.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at how a place gets its name! First, a place exists. Second, people name it. Third, the name spreads. And fourth, you can find it and talk about it, with a map or with friends.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Some names describe the place, like Riverbend. Others honor a person, remember a story, or come from an older language. Names can change over time, as people and stories change. Maps use names so travelers can find their way.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Guess why your town, street, or park got its name. Then ask a grown-up, or look it up in a book. Write down what you find out. Can you explain why names are helpful?

Outro

Every name is a little story about a place! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
