Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do we write?

The Big Idea

Have you ever had a great idea that you did not want to forget, like a funny joke or a secret recipe? Writing freezes a thought! Marks on a page let an idea travel farther than a voice. A voice fades away, but writing can stay. That is why people write down recipes, laws, and stories.

You Think

Step one: you think. An idea pops into your mind, maybe a story, a message, or a question. But thoughts stay inside your head, and other people cannot see them.

You Make Marks

Step two: you make marks. You draw or write words on a page, and your thought turns into something anyone can see. Those marks are a code that stands for sounds and ideas. Everyone who knows the code can read it.

Marks Stay

Step three: the marks stay. Unlike a spoken word, the marks do not disappear. They remain on the page. They can wait for days, or even for hundreds of years. Your own writing can wait for you, too.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at how writing works! There are four parts to the journey. First, you think of an idea. Next, you make marks. The marks stay on the page. And someday, someone can read them!

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A list is writing. A text message is writing. A book is writing, too! People invented writing more than 5,000 years ago, pressing marks into soft clay. Writing was invented in several places, by different groups of people. Writing lets you send a message to someone far away, or far in the future. A letter can cross an ocean, and a book can last for centuries.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Think of one sentence you want to read again someday. Write it down carefully, in your best handwriting. Put it somewhere safe, and read it again next week. Can you explain how writing helps your future self?
