Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do we have last names?

The Big Idea

Lots of people share the same first name. Think about how many Alexes there are! A last name helps people keep track of families and keep records straight. A label for the family branch! Last names also make it easier to find a person in a long list, like at school.

Many Share First Names

Step one: many people share first names. In a town, there might be several people named Sam or Mia. How could anyone tell them apart? Long ago, most villages did not need last names, because everyone knew each other.

A Name Tags the Branch

Step two: the last name tags the family branch. A last name is added to a first name to show which family someone belongs to. It works like a label on a branch of a big family tree.

Records Stay Clear

Step three: records stay clearer, and you can follow a family story. Schools, doctors, and libraries can keep records straight when people have two names. And families can trace their story back through time.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at a full name! The first name is your own personal name. The last name shows your family. Together, they say who you are.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Some last names started as jobs, like Baker. Others came from places, like Hill, or from a parent's name, like Johnson. Different cultures use names in different orders and ways. Some families pass names down, and others choose new ones.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Ask what your last name might have meant long ago. Ask a grown-up if they know your name's story. Does it come from a job, a place, or a family? Write down what you learn. Draw a little family branch!

Outro

Your name is a little piece of your family story. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
