Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do we get scars?

The Big Idea

When you get a cut that goes deeper than the surface, your body has to do some serious repair work. The repair crew fills the gap with extra strong fibers. A patch the body built! Scars are very common, and most of us have at least one.

Skin Opens

Step one: the skin opens. A deeper cut goes through the layers of your skin. A small scratch usually heals with no mark at all. Scar tissue is not exactly like the skin it replaces, so it can look or feel a bit different.

The Repair Crew Arrives

Step two: the repair crew arrives. Blood, cells, and helpers rush in to protect the cut and start fixing it. They clean up, and then begin to rebuild. The body's first job is to close the gap quickly and keep germs out.

Fibers Fill the Gap

Step three: new fibers fill the gap, and a mark may stay. Your body lays down strong fibers called collagen to close the gap. They are tough, but not exactly like before. The patch does its job, and the mark that is left is a scar, a sign of healing.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at skin healing! The cut goes through your skin layers. New collagen fibers weave a patch. And the healed patch is your scar.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Some scars fade a lot over time. Keep cuts clean, and ask a grown-up to help clean them. Sunscreen can keep scars from getting darker. Scars are a sign that your body healed itself.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Compare a small scratch with a deeper mark. Think of a small scratch that vanished. Think of a deeper cut that left a mark. What differences do you notice? Why might they heal differently?
