Intro
Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do we have belly buttons?
The Big Idea
Everyone has one, and it is right in the middle of your tummy. Before you were born, a cord brought you food and oxygen. The belly button is the healed spot where it was. A leftover dock! Do not worry, because belly buttons are completely safe and natural.
The Cord Did a Job
Step one: the cord did a job. Before birth, a cord called the umbilical cord connected you to your parent. It brought you food and oxygen. It was your lifeline while you grew.
Baby Is Born
Step two: the baby is born. Once you are born, you can eat and breathe on your own, so the cord is not needed. A doctor safely clamps and cuts it. It does not hurt, because the cord has no feeling.
The Spot Heals
Step three: the spot heals into a belly button. A small piece of the cord stays for a week or two, and then it dries up and falls off. The skin heals, and that spot becomes your belly button, also called your navel.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look at the cord! The umbilical cord links parent and baby. After birth, a small stump is left. And the healed spot is your navel.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Every person who grew inside a parent has one. Some belly buttons go in, and some stick out. Both innies and outies are completely normal. Your belly button is a scar that shows where you were connected.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Look in a mirror at your belly button. Is it an innie or an outie? Ask a grown-up if you can see their belly button, too. Compare them. What is the same? What is different?
