Why Do Babies Have Such Big Heads?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do babies have such big heads?

The Big Idea

Look at a baby, and you might notice the head looks big for the body. A baby's brain is already doing huge work, and it grows very fast early on. The brain gets a head start! That is why babies look so cute, with big foreheads and big eyes.

Brain Grows Early

Step one: the brain grows early. Before birth, and during the first years of life, the brain grows very quickly. It needs lots of space to grow, and that is a big reason the head is large.

The Skull Is Roomy

Step two: the skull is roomy. A baby's skull is made of several soft plates that are not yet joined together. That gives the growing brain room. It also helps a baby be born safely.

The Body Catches Up

Step three: the body catches up later. After that early start, arms, legs, and the body grow a lot more. As you grow, your head becomes a smaller part of you.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at head size! A newborn's head is about one fourth of the body's length. A kid's head is a smaller part of the body. And in a grown-up, the head is about one eighth.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A newborn's head is about one fourth of body length. The soft spots on a baby's head close up over time. A baby's brain roughly doubles in size in the first year. Bodies change shape as they grow, and that is normal.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Compare a baby photo with you now. Find a photo of yourself as a baby. Look at how big your head looks in the picture. Now look in the mirror. How did your proportions change?
