Why Do We See Spots After a Bright Light?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do we see spots after a bright light?

The Big Idea

After you look at a bright light, you may see a spot that floats around. That is because the cells in your eye stay busy for a moment. The spot is called an afterimage. It is a sort of eye echo.

Bright Light

Step one: a bright light. A strong light hits your eye, like a camera flash. Please never stare at a very bright light. Retinas have millions of light-sensing cells.

Cells Work Hard

Step two: cells work hard. Light excites cells in your retina, at the back of your eye. They send signals to your brain very fast. Staring at bright lights can hurt, so please look away quickly.

Light Goes

Step three: the light goes away. The light turns off, but the cells are still excited. They need a little time to settle down. The spot is like an echo in your eye.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at the ghost spot. The retina is the part at the back of your eye. The busy cells keep sending signals for a bit. The ghost spot is what you see, and it fades soon. The spot is just a leftover signal.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Do not stare at the sun. It can hurt your eyes! The spot usually fades after a few seconds. Afterimages can even show opposite colors. If spots stay or hurt, tell a grown-up. Your eyes always need rest from bright light.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Look at a lamp for just a second, then look away. Do not use a very bright light. Watch the afterimage spot fade. How long does it take to disappear?
