Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How does litter travel down a river?
The Big Idea
A river carries whatever falls into it, and that includes litter! Bottles, bags, and cans float or roll along with the current. They can end up stuck on a bank or far away in the sea.
Street to Drain
Step one: litter starts on land. Litter dropped on streets can wash into drains when it rains. Storm drains often lead straight to a stream or river, with no cleaning along the way.
Down the River
Step two: the river carries it. Plastic bottles, bags, and cans float or roll along until they get stuck on a bank. Others keep traveling for many miles until they reach the sea.
Tiny Pieces
Step three: plastic breaks up. Plastic breaks into tiny pieces that don't go away, and animals can mistake them for food. Picking up trash before it reaches water is the easiest fix.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Litter starts on streets and sidewalks. Rain pushes it into storm drains. The river carries it along. And much of it ends up in the sea.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Rivers carry a lot of the plastic that ends up in the sea. That means cleaning up near home helps oceans far away. Lots of small actions add up, like one piece of litter picked up at a time. Pick up litter only with a grown-up, using gloves.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Float a few bits of clean plastic and paper in a tub. Which float away? Which sink? Pick them all up afterward and recycle them. Then tell a grown-up what you noticed!
