Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What makes green slime grow in a river?

The Big Idea

Green slime grows in a river when algae get warm sunshine and extra nutrients! Algae are tiny plant-like living things that live in water. Too many nutrients make them grow fast.

Meet Algae

Step one: meet the algae. Algae are tiny plant-like living things that live in water. A few are normal, and they are an important food for water animals, like snails and tiny insects.

Extra Nutrients

Step two: add nutrients. Warm, sunny, slow-moving water with extra nutrients, like nitrogen and phosphorus from fertilizer or waste, makes algae grow fast. Extra nutrients are like fertilizer for algae.

Slime Problem

Step three: a slimy mat. A thick green mat can use up oxygen when it dies. Some blooms can be harmful, so keep kids and pets away from green scummy water.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Sunshine gives algae energy. Nutrients feed them. Then they grow into a thick green mat. When the mat dies, it can use up oxygen.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Extra nutrients are like fertilizer for algae. They can wash in from lawns, farms, and waste. Keeping extra nutrients out of rivers keeps the water healthy for fish and for people. Never touch green scummy water, and keep pets away too.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Ask a grown-up to fill two jars with pond water. Put them in a sunny window and add a pinch of plant food to just one. Which turns green faster over a week? Never drink it. Then tell a grown-up what you found!
