Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do rivers get smaller in late summer?
The Big Idea
Rivers get smaller in late summer because the water coming in drops way down! The snow is gone, the soil is dry, and there has been less rain. So the river shrinks and shows more of its bed.
Less Water In
Step one: less water arrives. By late summer, the snow has melted, the soil is dry, and there has been less rain. Fewer streams and fields send water into the river.
Water Goes Away
Step two: water disappears. Plants pull water out of the ground, and the hot Sun evaporates water from the river surface. Evaporates means turns into invisible vapor in the air.
Groundwater Feeds It
Step three: groundwater takes over. Now the river is fed mostly by groundwater that seeps in from underground. So the river shrinks, the banks stand higher, and gravel bars appear.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! The hot Sun warms the water and the land. Thirsty plants pull water from the ground. Gravel bars show above the surface. And groundwater keeps a thin river flowing.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! A river's lowest flow is called its low-water period. The steady flow from groundwater is called baseflow. Rivers rise and fall with the seasons, and that is normal. Low rivers have hidden holes and slippery rocks, so watch from the bank with a grown-up.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Fill a shallow dish with water. Leave it in the sun for a few days, and mark the level each day. How fast does it shrink? Then share what you found!
