What Does “Flood Stage” Mean?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What does “flood stage” mean?

The Big Idea

Flood stage is the water level where a river starts to cause trouble! At that height, water begins to spill over the banks onto roads or near buildings. It gives everyone an easy way to talk about how serious a flood is.

Measure at a Gauge

Step one: use a gauge. A gauge is a ruler for a river that measures the height of the water. Each town has its own flood stage, depending on how high its banks and streets are.

Cross the Line

Step two: the river rises. When the river goes above flood stage, it starts to overflow its banks. That can cover roads and cause trouble for buildings, so forecasters issue warnings.

Bigger Floods

Step three: higher levels. Above flood stage there are levels called moderate flood and major flood. Each level tells people how much help and caution they need.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! At normal level, the river stays in its channel. At flood stage, water starts to spill over. At moderate flood, more land and roads are covered. And a major flood is the most serious of all.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A gauge can show a river's height to within a fraction of an inch. That helps forecasters see small changes early. Flood stage turns a big event into an easy number. Always keep far back from rising water with a grown-up.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Mark a ruler with normal, flood stage, and major flood. Stand the ruler in a bucket. Add water, a little at a time, and see each level. Then explain your ruler to a grown-up!
