Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do rivers rise every spring?

The Big Idea

Rivers rise every spring because winter snow melts all at once! In cold places, snow piles up on the land and in the mountains all winter long. When spring warmth arrives, the meltwater runs into streams and rivers, and they swell.

Snow Piles Up

Step one: snow piles up. All winter, snow falls and stays on the land and the mountains instead of running away. It is like a giant frozen water tank waiting for warm weather.

Warmth Arrives

Step two: spring warms things up. The Sun gets stronger, the snow melts, and the water runs downhill into streams. So much water arrives at the same time that rivers swell and run fast.

The Spring Freshet

Step three: the river rises. This yearly rise is called the spring freshet. The fast water carries mud and branches, and many northern rivers are highest in May or June.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! First, snow piles up in the cold winter. Then spring warmth arrives. The snow melts into meltwater that runs downhill. And the river rises, runs fast, and carries lots of mud.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Mountain rivers often peak later, in summer, when high snow melts. That is because the highest snow is the last to melt. Spring rivers are fast, cold, and muddy. Always watch from far back, with a grown-up.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Pack snow or crushed ice into a tray with a slope. Ask a grown-up to help. Set it in a room and let it warm up. Watch the meltwater flow. Where does the water go? Then tell a grown-up what you discovered!
