Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How did paddlewheel steamboats work?

The Big Idea

A paddlewheel steamboat used hot steam to turn a giant wheel that pushed the boat along! It burned wood or coal to make steam. The wheel did the pushing, with a splashing, chugging sound.

Make Steam

Step one: make steam. A steamboat burned wood or coal to heat water in a boiler. When water gets very hot, it turns into steam, which takes up much more room, so it pushes hard.

Push the Pistons

Step two: pistons. The hot steam pushed pistons back and forth, like a bicycle rider's legs pumping. The pistons turned a big paddle wheel at the back of the boat, called a sternwheeler, or on its sides.

Paddle the Water

Step three: the wheel pushes. The wheel pushed against the water, and the boat moved forward. Sternwheelers carried people and goods on rivers like the Yukon and the Fraser in Canada, often into places with no roads.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at a steamboat! A fire heated the boiler. Steam rushed out. It pushed the pistons. And the big paddle wheel turned.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The SS Klondike in Whitehorse, Yukon, is a restored sternwheeler you can visit. It carried supplies and passengers. Steamboats changed how people traveled. Never go near fires or boilers, and stay with a grown-up.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like an engineer! Make a paddle wheel from cardboard and a pencil. With a grown-up, hold it under a gentle stream from a faucet. Watch it spin! Share what you discover with a grown-up.
