Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why did people build towns next to rivers?
The Big Idea
People built towns next to rivers because rivers give so much! They supply water, food, rich soil, and a way to travel. That is why many big cities sit beside rivers.
Water and Food
Step one: water and food. Rivers supply fresh water for drinking, farming, and washing, as well as fish to eat. Long ago, people could not just turn on a tap, so living close to a river made daily life much easier.
Rich Soil
Step two: good farmland. When rivers flood, they leave behind rich soil that helps crops grow. Farmers settled near rivers to grow grain, vegetables, and fruit, and soon villages grew into towns.
Roads and Power
Step three: travel and power. Rivers also work like highways, so boats could carry goods and people. Some towns used river power to run mills, so trade grew, markets opened, and little towns grew into big cities.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look at a river town! People drank and washed with river water. Farmers grew crops in rich soil. Boats carried goods and people. And mills used the power of flowing water.
