Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What are freshwater mussels doing on the riverbed?

The Big Idea

Freshwater mussels sit half buried in the sand, pulling in water and filtering out tiny bits of food! They work like living water filters, cleaning the river as they feed. That helps keep the river clear.

Half Buried

Step one: sitting still. A freshwater mussel stays half buried in the sand or gravel of the riverbed. It hardly moves, but it is very busy inside its shell, opening it a little to breathe and eat.

Water Filters

Step two: filtering. The mussel pulls in water, keeps tiny bits of food like algae, and sends the cleaner water back out. A single mussel can filter many gallons a day, which helps keep the water clear.

Hitchhiking Babies

Step three: baby mussels. Baby mussels hitch a ride on fish for a while before dropping to the bottom to grow up. The fish are usually not harmed. Many kinds of mussels are rare and need protection.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at a mussel! A hard shell protects its soft body. It pulls water in and filters out food. Then it sends cleaner water out. And its babies ride on fish.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Some mussels can live for over 50 years. Others live even longer, and they grow a new ring on their shell every year. They are important helpers for river health. Look but do not collect, and stay with a grown-up.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, pour dirty water through a coffee filter. See what stays behind. Mussels clean water this way! Share what you discover with a grown-up.

Outro

Mussels quietly filter the river and keep it cleaner. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
