Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How do river bugs cling to rocks in a strong current?

The Big Idea

River bugs have clever grips, like flat bodies, claws, hooks, and sticky silk! These tricks keep them from being swept away. Staying low and staying put wins in fast water.

Flat Bodies

Step one: be flat. Some bugs have flat bodies that fit under stones, where the water moves slowly. The current slides right over their backs instead of pushing them, like wind passing over a low hill.

Hooks and Claws

Step two: hooks and claws. Many river bugs have strong claws on their feet that grab the rough surface of a rock. Some have small hooks, like tiny grappling hooks, and they walk carefully, one foot at a time.

Sticky Silk

Step three: sticky silk. Black fly larvae spin a little pad of silk on a stone and hold on with tiny hooks. It works like a seat belt for a bug, and it keeps the larva safe even in fast water.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Flat bodies keep bugs low. Hooks and claws grab the rocks. Silk makes a sticky pad. And rocks give them a safe place to live.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Many river insects have flat bodies that fit under stones. Water moves slowly right next to a rock. Hooks and silk help bugs hold on. Stay with a grown-up near any river.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, put a toothpick, a coin, and a flat pebble in a tray with trickling water. Which one stays put best? Flat shapes stay put! Share what you discover with a grown-up.
