Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What lives under the rocks in a river?

The Big Idea

Under river rocks live lots of tiny animals, like mayfly nymphs, stonefly nymphs, and caddisfly larvae! They are called water bugs, and they are important helpers. A single rock can be a whole busy neighborhood.

Meet the Bugs

Step one: meet the residents. Young mayflies, stoneflies, and caddisflies live under river rocks, where the current is gentler and hiding places are plentiful. Later, many of them grow wings and fly away as adult insects.

Big Name

Step two: a big name. These animals are called macroinvertebrates, which just means animals without backbones that you can see without a microscope. Ask a grown-up to help you say it!

River Helpers

Step three: they are helpers. They munch algae and old leaves, and in turn they feed fish and birds. Scientists count them to learn how healthy a river is, because many of them need clean, cool water.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Gently turn over a rock, with a grown-up. You may find mayfly and stonefly nymphs. They munch on algae and leaves. And they become snacks for fish and birds.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A single river rock can host dozens of tiny animals. Many water bugs need clean, cool water. That makes them great health detectives. Be careful near water, and stay with a grown-up.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, look up photos of mayfly, stonefly, and caddisfly larvae online. Draw your favorite one. Label its legs and tails! Share what you discover with a grown-up.

Outro

Under every river rock is a tiny world of busy animals. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
