What Does a Stream Gauge Do?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What does a stream gauge do?

The Big Idea

A stream gauge is a station that measures how high the water in a river is, and how fast it flows! It sends the information by satellite or radio to scientists and to the public. It is like a thermometer for a river, always keeping watch.

Sensors Measure

Step one: sensors measure. A gauge sits beside the river and checks the water level all day and all night. Some gauges also measure how fast the water flows.

Data Travels

Step two: the data travels. The gauge sends its numbers by satellite or radio. Scientists get fresh readings every few minutes.

People Use It

Step three: people use the data. Gauges help predict floods and droughts. Towns can get ready early when a river is rising.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at a stream gauge! A sensor measures the water level. An antenna sends the numbers away. A website shows them to everyone. And warnings help keep people safe. You can look up the gauge nearest to you.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The Water Survey of Canada runs thousands of gauging stations. Gauges help predict floods and droughts. You can look up the gauge nearest to you on your country's water-data website. Look at gauge data online with a grown-up.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, look up a gauge for a river near you online. Is the water higher or lower than usual today? Write down the number. Check again next week. You just read a river's vital signs!
