What Colors Can River Water Be, and What Do They Mean?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What colors can river water be, and what do they mean?

The Big Idea

River water can be many colors, and each color is a clue! It can be brown with mud, green with algae, or clear over clean gravel. It can even be milky or tea-colored.

Brown Water

Step one: brown water. Brown usually means lots of tiny mud and soil in the water. A rainstorm upstream can turn a river brown in a hurry.

Green Water

Step two: green water. Green often comes from algae, which are tiny plant-like living things. They grow best in warm, sunny water, so green rivers are common in summer.

Clear and Milky

Step three: clear, milky, or tea. Clear water often flows over clean gravel. Milky water has rock dust, and tea-colored water has leaf juices.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at river colors! Brown shows lots of mud. Green shows algae. Milky shows fine rock dust. And tea color shows leaf juices. A change in color can mean a rainstorm upstream, far from where you are standing.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Some northern rivers run dark brown, like tea. Color helps scientists guess what is in the water. Color alone does not tell you whether water is safe. Never drink river water, and stay with a grown-up.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Make a color chart of river water. Use clear glasses with a drop of different food colors. Label each one with a reason, like mud or algae. Do not drink any of it. You just made a river color chart!
