Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What are riffles and pools?
The Big Idea
Along many streams, shallow bumpy stretches called riffles alternate with calm deep spots called pools! Riffles are noisy and bubbly, and they are great homes for insects. Pools are quiet places where fish rest.
Riffles
Step one: riffles. A riffle is a shallow stretch where water runs over stones. The tumbling water mixes in lots of air, so riffles are full of oxygen.
Pools
Step two: pools. A pool is a deeper, calmer spot where the water flows slowly. Fish can rest there without working hard, and they can hide from hungry birds.
A Repeating Pattern
Step three: a repeating pattern. The pattern repeats about every five to seven times the stream's width. Healthy streams usually have both.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look at a stream bed! A riffle is shallow and splashy. A pool is deep and slow. Fish rest in pools and feed in riffles. And riffles add fresh oxygen to the water. Together, they make a great home for fish, insects, and plants.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Fish often rest in pools and feed in riffles. Riffles are noisy and bubbly, full of oxygen. Healthy streams usually have both riffles and pools. Watch streams from the bank, with a grown-up.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Draw a side view of a stream bed with gentle humps and dips. Label two riffles and a pool. Draw arrows for the water. Where does it speed up and slow down? You just drew a healthy stream!
