Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do some rivers split into many weaving channels?

The Big Idea

Some rivers split into many weaving channels, like braided hair! They are called braided rivers. It happens when a river carries lots of sand and gravel, and not enough water to push it all along.

Too Much Load

Step one: too much cargo. Some rivers carry more sand and gravel than the water can easily move. The river gets clogged, like a crowded hallway.

Bars Form

Step two: bars form. The water drops its load in the middle and makes a bar of gravel. Then it splits and flows around the bar on both sides.

Channels Weave

Step three: more bars, more braids. More bars form, and the river splits again and again. This often happens below melting glaciers or on wide, flat plains.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at a braided river! First, the river is loaded with gravel. A bar builds up in the middle of the stream. The water splits around it. Soon there are many weaving channels. Like strands in a braid, they split and join again.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Braided rivers can change their paths in just one season. They are often found below melting glaciers. Their channels split and join again and again. Stay with a grown-up near any river.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Sprinkle some flour on a tray and tilt it. With a grown-up, trickle a little water down it. Watch the channels split and join again, just like a real river. That is a braided river! You just made a braided river on a tray!

Some rivers weave like braids. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
