Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Which rivers are the longest in the world?

The Big Idea

The longest rivers in the world stretch for thousands of miles! The Nile in Africa and the Amazon in South America are usually named the two longest, each about 4,000 miles. Scientists still debate which of the two is longer.

Giant Rivers

Step one: meet more giant rivers. The Yangtze in China and the Mississippi and Missouri in North America each run about 3,900 miles. The Yenisei in Siberia is also among the longest.

Canada Rivers

Step two: look at Canada. The mighty Mackenzie River winds nearly 1,100 miles to the Arctic Ocean. It is the longest river in Canada.

Measure It

Step three: how do we measure? Rivers are measured from their farthest source to their mouth. Even though they curve, the measurement follows every bend.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at measuring a river! Start at the farthest source. Follow every bend and curve. Then compare the length to a map's scale. And stop at the mouth. Measuring a river is tricky, because it twists and changes with the seasons.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The longest rivers stretch for thousands of miles. The Mackenzie River winds nearly 1,100 miles to the Arctic Ocean. River lengths can change a little as a river shifts its path. Stay with a grown-up near any river.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Lay a piece of string along the Mackenzie River on a map or globe. Then stretch it flat against the map's scale. How long is the river? Try another river, and compare! You just measured a river!
