Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Where does a river begin?

The Big Idea

Most rivers begin as tiny trickles, so small you could step right across them! Rain and melting snow soak into the ground, then seep back out at a spring or run downhill. The place where a river starts is called its source.

Rain and Snow

Step one: water arrives. Rain falls and snow melts high up on hills and mountains. Some soaks into the soil like a sponge, and the rest trickles over the ground.

A Spring Appears

Step two: the water comes back out. Underground water can seep out of the hillside in a place called a spring. It is cool and clear, and it is often where a stream is born.

Streams Join

Step three: little streams join together. Many small streams meet and make a bigger one. The highest streams at the very top are called the headwaters of a river.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at a river's beginning! Rain falls on the hills and soaks in. Snow melts in spring and sends water trickling down. A spring lets underground water seep out. And a stream carries it on its way downhill. Four ways that a river gets started.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Some rivers start from a trickle you could step across. Many small streams join together as they flow downhill. The highest streams are called headwaters. Always stay with a grown-up near water.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! On a rainy day, watch water run down a driveway or sidewalk with a grown-up. Look for tiny streams of water. Where do the little streams join together? Draw what you see, like a map of a baby river! You just studied how rivers begin!

Rivers carry stories to the sea. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
