Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Is there a volcano in Antarctica?

The Big Idea

Yes! Antarctica has a volcano, and it is still active! Mount Erebus on Ross Island is the southernmost active volcano on Earth. Fire and ice share the same continent.

Meet Erebus

Step one: meet Mount Erebus. It rises from Ross Island, near the coast of Antarctica, as the southernmost active volcano on Earth. It is about 12,400 feet tall, taller than many mountains.

Glowing Top

Step two: a glowing top. At the summit, there is a lake of glowing melted rock, called lava. It has been bubbling away for a very long time, and it sometimes puffs out steam and gas.

Ice Caves

Step three: ice caves. Steam rising from the ground freezes into towers and caves of ice around the slopes. Scientists watch the volcano from a safe distance with instruments and cameras.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Erebus is a tall cone of dark rock, topped with snow. Glowing lava sits in a lake at the top. Steam rises from cracks in the ground. And the steam freezes into ice caves on the slopes.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Mount Erebus is about 12,400 feet tall. Its lava lake has been glowing for decades, which is rare for a volcano. Instruments and cameras help scientists watch it from afar. Never visit a volcano without trained experts.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Draw Mount Erebus, with ice at the base and a glow at the peak. Add a label that says fire and ice. Share your drawing with a friend. Share what you discover with a grown-up.

Outro

Mount Erebus shows that fire and ice can share a continent. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
