Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How do supplies reach the bottom of the world?

The Big Idea

Supplies reach the bottom of the world by ship, plane, and long overland tractor trips! Each way has its own job, and the weather decides the schedule. Together, they keep the stations running.

By Ship

Step one: by ship. A ship brings big loads of fuel, food, and equipment once a year to coastal Antarctic bases. Icebreakers help clear the way through the sea ice, so the ship can reach the shore.

By Plane

Step two: by plane. Planes fly in people and special cargo, like medicine, fresh food, and science equipment. Some supplies are even dropped by parachute.

By Tractor Train

Step three: by tractor train. A long tractor train hauls fuel more than 1,000 miles from the coast to the South Pole. The trip takes about a month, and drivers sleep in cozy cabins along the way.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! A cargo ship carries the biggest loads of all. A plane flies in people and special cargo. Sometimes a parachute drops supplies from the air. And a tractor train hauls fuel over the ice.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Some supplies are dropped by parachute from planes. A tractor train can pull sleds with many tons of fuel. Everything must be planned months ahead. Whatever arrives must be packed carefully, because it may sit in the cold.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Make a supply list for a base for one week. How would you pack it to fit in a small cargo box? What would you leave out? Share what you discover with a grown-up.
