Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do compasses go haywire near the poles?
The Big Idea
A compass points to Earth's magnetic poles, and those are not the same as the geographic poles! Near the magnetic North Pole, the needle can tilt and wander. That is why explorers use more than a compass.
Earth Is a Magnet
Step one: Earth is a magnet. Deep inside Earth, moving metal makes a magnetic field around the planet. A compass needle lines up with that field.
Moving Pole
Step two: the pole moves. The magnetic North Pole is in the Arctic Ocean north of Canada, and it slowly drifts. Near it, the needle tilts downward and can wander.
Use Many Tools
Step three: use many tools. Explorers use GPS, maps, and the Sun and stars to find their way. A compass is still handy, but it is just one helper.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! The needle points toward the magnetic pole. That pole sits in a different place than the true North Pole. Up there, the needle can tilt and swing. So GPS gives travelers a second check.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! The magnetic North Pole has been moving toward Siberia, by tens of miles a year at times. The geographic North Pole, the top of the world, stays put. Maps are updated to match the changes. Magnets can pull a compass off course.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Hold a compass near a fridge magnet. Watch the needle swing. Magnets can pull a compass off course, just as Earth's magnetism does. Share what you discover with a grown-up.
Outro
A compass follows magnetic poles, so polar explorers use many tools. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
