Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do eyelashes and beards get frosty in the cold?

The Big Idea

Frosty eyelashes and beards come from your own warm breath! Your breath is full of invisible water vapor, which is water in the form of a gas. When it meets freezing air, it turns into tiny ice crystals.

Warm Breath

Step one: warm breath. Every breath you exhale is warm and holds water vapor. Normally you cannot see it, but on a cold day it makes a puff you can see.

Meets Cold Air

Step two: it meets very cold air. The vapor cools quickly and freezes into tiny ice crystals. Those crystals can stick to anything nearby, and build up into frost.

Frost Sticks

Step three: frost sticks. The crystals cling to hair, scarves, beards, and eyelashes, which makes them look like tiny icicles. A scarf or face mask helps keep your face warm and protects your skin.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Warm breath carries water vapor. Cold air chills it fast. The vapor freezes into little ice crystals. A scarf catches the frost and keeps your skin warm.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Frost can make eyelashes look like tiny icicles. In the very coldest places, people have even heard breath crackle as it freezes. Cover your face on bitter days. Go inside if your skin feels numb or painful.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! On a cold day, with a grown-up, breathe out onto a dark mitten. Look closely with a magnifying glass. Do you see tiny ice crystals? Share what you discover with a grown-up.

Outro

Warm breath freezes on cold air and leaves frost behind. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
