Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why was Halley VI research station built on giant skis?
The Big Idea
Halley VI sits on a floating ice shelf in Antarctica, where snow keeps piling up and ice keeps moving! So its builders put the station on giant skis and legs. That way it can rise up and move away.
Snow Piles Up
Step one: snow piles up. On the ice shelf, new snow falls and builds up year after year. A normal building would slowly be buried under the snow, and the shelf itself drifts toward the sea.
Raise the Legs
Step two: raise the legs. Each colorful module stands on hydraulic legs that can be raised as snow builds. That keeps the station on top of the snow.
Slide Away
Step three: slide away. The big skis let the whole station be towed across the ice to a safer place. In 2017, Halley VI was moved inland to a safer spot, in a long, slow convoy.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! The station sits on a floating ice shelf. Hydraulic legs lift each module. Giant skis let it be pulled across the ice. From far away, it looks like a train of bright blue and red pods.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Halley VI looks like a train of bright blue and red pods. Its pods are linked together like train cars. Scientists there study the sky, weather, and ice. It is named after astronomer Edmond Halley.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Build a model on skis from a cardboard box and two craft sticks. Push it across carpet, then across a tray of flour. What happens? Share what you discover with a grown-up.
Outro
Halley VI uses legs and skis to stay above moving snow and ice. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
