What Do Polar Scientists Eat All Winter?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What do polar scientists eat all winter?

The Big Idea

Polar scientists eat well all winter, thanks to careful planning! Chefs plan the menus months ahead and store lots of frozen, canned, and dried food. Some stations even grow fresh greens indoors.

Plan Ahead

Step one: plan ahead. Chefs work out menus months before winter and order enough food for everyone. Once the last plane or ship leaves for winter, no more food can arrive, so every meal must be planned.

Store Smart

Step two: store smart. Frozen, canned, and dried foods last a long time, so stations stock up on them. Rice, beans, pasta, flour, and frozen meats and vegetables are all popular, and some stations also grow fresh greens indoors.

Share Meals

Step three: share meals. Everyone gathers to eat, and some nights have themed dinners or baking contests. Good food and good company keep spirits up through the long, dark months.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Canned food can sit on a shelf for a long time. Frozen food stays fresh in big freezers. Some stations grow fresh greens indoors. And treats, like cake, make dinner special.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Fresh fruit is very precious, and it is shared as a treat. A final delivery arrives before the last plane or ship leaves. Cooks are some of the most popular people on a base! Bakers make bread and cookies often.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Plan three days of meals using only food that never needs a fridge. Include a treat! Then ask a grown-up what you could really make. Share what you discover with a grown-up.
